What are illustration annuals?

What this category gathers are not books centered on a single artist, but annuals and anthologies that compile in a single volume the work of numerous illustrators. If an individual art book serves to get to know one person's drawing in depth, the annual serves to take in at once who is active today. Published each year, these books directly reflect the trends of contemporary illustration.

ILLUSTRATION

ILLUSTRATION is the illustrators' annual that the publisher Shoeisha brings out each year. The editorial team selects around 150 outstanding illustrators of that year and devotes to each their own pages alongside a sample of their work. The artists included are renewed almost entirely with respect to the previous edition, so that each year gathers a completely new lineup. The cover is signed by artists who concentrate the attention of the moment — loundraw, Posuka Demizu, Daisuke Richard —, and at the end of the volume interviews and conversations with illustrators and art directors are collected. Employing printing techniques specific to art books, it is conceived as a book for contemplating the work and entering into the personality of each author.

VISIONS

VISIONS is the illustrators' annual supervised by pixiv, the illustration publishing platform. As a pixiv project to "bring the work of creators to the whole world," it compiles each year the work of around 170 artists, regardless of their style or their place of activity. Having as its base one of the largest illustration communities in the world, its distinctive trait is that it gathers, from Japan and from abroad, artists who work mainly on publishing sites and on social media. On the cover and in the special interviews appear popular illustrators such as Kei Mochizuki or Rorua; it also has an English edition, and the series' accumulated print run exceeds 380,000 copies.

Illustration File

Illustration File is the illustrators' annual published by the publisher Genkosha. Its origin lies in the specialized magazine Illustration, founded in 1979. Unlike the two previous annuals, based on a selection by the editorial team, this one is composed from the artists' own submissions, and gathers close to 800 illustrators. From professionals at the forefront of publishing and advertising to artists who are about to make their name, it collects the recent work of each author alongside the medium in which it was published, the credits, the contact details and a brief biography. It is a directory of practical use for hiring illustrators in the world of publishing and advertising, but its enormous number of artists also makes it a great gateway into all of contemporary Japanese illustration.

This category brings together annuals and anthologies in original Japanese editions, published by publishers such as Shoeisha, Kadokawa and Genkosha.
