What is seinen manga?
Seinen manga is the manga published in magazines aimed at a young adult audience. Conceived for an older reader than that of shōnen, it has its origin in the magazine Big Comic, founded in 1968. In the 1980s, Weekly Young Magazine, Weekly Young Jump and other magazines presented as sisters of the shōnen titles appeared. Without breaking with shōnen, seinen manga delves into more complex human relationships and into themes such as violence, society or work, vastly expanding the field of expression.
The world of seinen manga
Seinen manga has no fixed thematic framework. Its breadth ranges from the high-intensity historical action of Berserk or Vagabond, to the science fiction of Ghost in the Shell, the self-contained-world fantasies of Dorohedoro or Made in Abyss, or the stories about art and everyday life such as Blue Period. As opposed to shōnen, which tends to narrate the protagonist's growth, seinen manga often delves into the conflicts and the dark zones of the human being. For that very reason, many are the works that linger long in the reader.
The art books of seinen manga
This category brings together the art books devoted to seinen manga and its anime adaptations, in original Japanese editions. Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue, Ghost in the Shell by Masamune Shirow, Dorohedoro by Q Hayashida: official art books that collect the work of each author, anime design material and guides for deciphering their worlds, published by publishers such as Kodansha, Akita Shoten or Shogakukan. They let you contemplate calmly, in large format, a drawing traced down to the last detail.
