Japanese tenugui towel Kurochiku (Kyoto) - Model Momiji

Japanese hand towel from the prestigious brand Kurochiku.

The front is made of towelling fabric with a print of Japanese maple leaves (momiji) in red, orange, yellow, green and pink, some solid and others drawn only in outline, scattered across a white background.

This type of towel, known in Japanese as tenugui (手拭い), has a curious origin. During the Edo period a great many cotton kimonos were made, and these distinctive towels were produced from the leftover fabric. Tenugui tend to share the same measurement, 34 cm wide, precisely because that is the width of the fabric roll.

Tenugui have many uses. They can be used as a hand towel, a kitchen cloth, a scarf or even as a head covering.
