A nameless cat observes, with dry irony, the daily life of its owner — an English teacher — and the intellectuals who gather around him. Through the animal's detached gaze, the novel paints a sharp portrait of Meiji-era middle-class society. This first volume introduces the narrating cat and the household where it lives.
